Real Or Nonsense Word Game

 Real or Nonsense Word Game

BY AMANDA TESSIER
Mrs Tessier Kindergarten

One of my favorite ways to help my kindergarten students build strong phonics skills is through hands-on word games.  This Real or Nonsense Word Game uses ASTROBRIGHTS paper to create colorful letter cards that students can pick from and try to make a real word.  You can play in groups of students or the way I like to play, teacher against students.

Each team takes a turn choosing a beginning, middle and ending sound to see if they can make a real word.  If a real word is made, they get a point.  If not, the next team gets a turn.  The first team to get three points wins!

There is a letter template provided for you to get started.  It’s simple to prep, fun to play and packed with learning!

Supplies:

  • Astrobrights® Mega Collection Pack
  • Printer with Black Ink
  • Scissors
  • Laminator (Optional)
  • Laminating Pouches (Optional)
  • Magnets (Optional)
  • Real or Nonsense Word Game Template
  • Bins for board (Optional)

4. Apply a magnet to the back of the cards if you choose to play on a magnetic whiteboard.

Now you’re all ready to play! Divide the students into two groups or play the game teacher against the students.  As mentioned before, each team takes a turn to pick a beginning, middle, and ending sound.  If a real word is created, the team gets a point.  If not, it is the next team’s turn to give it a try.  The first team to make it to 3 points, wins!

This colorized game will have your students excited about learning and begging to play again!
